Restraint was Oded Balilty’s second one-man show at
N & N Aman Gallery.
The exhibition features utterly different images from Balilty’s photojournalism. Switching from a dynamic style aiming to commemorate a person or moment, he turns to fixed objects. He chooses to ignore the instincts of a photojournalist and experience a different process – one less intuitive, and more deliberate.
The root of restraint is wisdom and strength. Without them, it is too hard to hold back. The punching mats in these photos serve to teach young boxers how to hit their opponent, but also how to control their emotions and impulses in the same way as the photographer learns to control his.
